Beaufort Jazz

Great music – and you are invited!

Gig update including latest on the Southport Jazz Festival

Southport Jazz FestivalOnce again a number of musicians who support our Beaufort Jazz evenings will be participating at the Southport International Jazz Festival. Two gigs that have come to our attention will be held in the Town Hall Gardens. The Garden gigs are free for the general public to enjoy and on a fine day there can be few better ways to spend a little time. It’s worth noting that in the event of bad weather these gigs are relocated to one of the nearby hotels. This year it seems to be the Bold Hotel – but please check.

Swingology – Town Hall Gardens – 2.30pm Friday 11th May

Petrus –  Town Hall Gardens –  11.30am Saturday 12th May

We also understand that Vernon Fuller, Twin Frets and Modjango will be appearing. If you want to check out the full line-up you can download the famous pocket guide Festival programme by clicking here. It’s good to see that some new venues have been added this year and hopefully they will be well attended.

If you miss Petrus at the Festival they will also be playing at the Wilmslow Conservative Club on the 14th May (8 pm start).

Last but not least, Adam Palma will be performing with Joscho Stephan at the Barnaby Arts Festival at 8pm in the Macclesfield Town Hall on the 24th June. They will also be holding a master class earlier the same day at 2pm in the live room of Cabin 5150 recording studios. This is a rare appearance in the UK from Joscho and his website lists this as his only UK date. John McCormick will feature on bass and Kristyna Myles will be the guest vocalist. Definitely one to include on your gig list.

Gig update

One regular event which we always try to mention here is the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain, which stands tall  amongst the regions musical events. Not many festivals could justify such an imposing title, but this one can, due in no small part to the ceaseless efforts of Rob Smith, the long-term festival director of this excellent event.

Understandably it came as a surprise when we learnt that Rob has decided to call it a day. But nothing is forever and Rob has passed his duties over to a new director Kate Carpenter – who on the one hand has inherited something special, but on the other has a hard act to follow. Best wishes to Kate who has been involved with the festival for a good few years and will no doubt keep it in safe hands.

A number of musicians who have supported Beaufort Jazz are appearing at the festival.

Gary Potter – 7.30pm Sunday 6th November – Birkenhead Priory

Modjango  – 11.30am Sunday 13th November – Woodside Terminal

Esmond Selwyn – 12.30pm Sunday 13th November – Floral Pavilion Plaza

Adam Palma – 12.30 and 6.30pm 26th November – Floral Pavilion Plaza

Another popular venue for us here in the North West is Parr Street in Liverpool where excellent jazz music is to be found every Tuesday night. Petrus will be appearing on Tuesday 15th November at 8pm and we would expect a number of Beaufort regulars to be attending.

Finally a classic gig is in prospect at the Lantern Theatre in Liverpool when John Wheatcroft and Daniel John Martin team up for An evening of Gypsy Jazz on Friday December 2nd.

Many will remember when we celebrated our 100th Beaufort Jazz evening in February earlier this year and welcomed Daniel John Martin as our featured artist for the evening. More recently John Wheatcroft performed the featured spot and it has to be said that both evenings were outstanding.

The Lantern is a relatively new venue and its website can be found by clicking the link here. It is positively minute compared to most theatres as it probably holds less than a hundred people. That’s less than the Ellerbrook Suite at the Briars Hall so this could well be a full house.

Enjoy

Southport Jazz Festival – events announced

Southport Jazz festival logoThe line up for the Southport International Jazz Festival has just been announced with the event programme now available online. Please feel free to click on the blue text which will allow you to view and download the programme. For the first time the Festival will take place over 5 days from May 25th to the 29th with a gig on the Wednesday night at The Shrimper on Fylde Road. As usual there are a number of very familiar faces appearing at the Festival who have played at Beaufort Jazz evenings over the years…..

Funkus Monkus Noon Town Hall Gardens – Thursday 26th May

Twin Frets Noon Town Hall Gardens – Friday 27th May

Petrus 2.30pm Town Hall Gardens – Friday 27th May

Sunday Brunch with Vernon Fuller 11am Lords Café Bar – Sunday 29th May

Modjango 2.30pm The Inn Beer Shop – Sunday 29th May

Swingology 5pm Town Hall Gardens – Sunday 29th May

All gigs are taken from the event programme but you would be wise to double-check before travelling. In bad weather last year some of the outdoor events in the Town Hall Gardens were moved indoors to the Prince of Wales Hotel – but this wasn’t very well publicised with just a small insignificant notice on the railings to entrance on Lord Street. So if you are in Southport and it is raining it’s worth checking to see if the event is happening indoors somewhere.

Enjoy!

Beaufort musicians – gig update

Guitar Festival logoAs we enter November the days may shorter and the weather colder, but at least we can look forward to some high quality live music events – one of which is the annual International Guitar Festival of Great Britain. Now in its 22nd year. the Festival has played host to many Beaufort musicians over the years. This year is no exception with the following two gigs coming to our attention.

Modjango are set to appear  at the Floral Pavillion Winter Gardens on November 5th,  the opening date of the festival. They are appearing with the Djangonauts in an evening which is a tribute to Django Reinhardt. Details can be found here

Also Tom Sykes will be playing in the Les Bolger jazz guitar ensemble. They will be appearing at the Floral Pavillion Winter Gardens on November 7th. Details of their gig to be found at this link

If you enjoy Beaufort evenings you are likely to enjoy these gigs. It’s also worth checking out many of the other performances on the Festival website which can be found here
