Beaufort Jazz

Great music – and you are invited!

Grand opening of the Rainford Junction

Many will remember that the Rainford Junction pub had an excellent reputation for being a live music venue with some highly regarded Bluegrass musicians playing there over the years. Unfortunately the pub was closed a few months ago and the future seemed very uncertain. It was therefore very good news that Paul Draper (our resident sound man at Beaufort Jazz) had acquired the Junction and intended to reopen as a pub with live music once again top of the agenda.

When visiting  just after Paul had started the project it was clear that much work was needed to restore the Junction to former glory. The upstairs function room was an excellent music space but was looking very tired. After much hard work the Junction finally reopened its doors on Friday 5th of May with the pub and the function room now completely refurbished.

Inevitably music was a major part of the evening with Trez Fez performing in the function room which has now banished the old furniture and fittings and boasts comfy seating. Hopefully the Junction will be a great success and help keep live music alive and kicking.

Gig update including latest on the Southport Jazz Festival

Southport Jazz FestivalOnce again a number of musicians who support our Beaufort Jazz evenings will be participating at the Southport International Jazz Festival. Two gigs that have come to our attention will be held in the Town Hall Gardens. The Garden gigs are free for the general public to enjoy and on a fine day there can be few better ways to spend a little time. It’s worth noting that in the event of bad weather these gigs are relocated to one of the nearby hotels. This year it seems to be the Bold Hotel – but please check.

Swingology – Town Hall Gardens – 2.30pm Friday 11th May

Petrus –  Town Hall Gardens –  11.30am Saturday 12th May

We also understand that Vernon Fuller, Twin Frets and Modjango will be appearing. If you want to check out the full line-up you can download the famous pocket guide Festival programme by clicking here. It’s good to see that some new venues have been added this year and hopefully they will be well attended.

If you miss Petrus at the Festival they will also be playing at the Wilmslow Conservative Club on the 14th May (8 pm start).

Last but not least, Adam Palma will be performing with Joscho Stephan at the Barnaby Arts Festival at 8pm in the Macclesfield Town Hall on the 24th June. They will also be holding a master class earlier the same day at 2pm in the live room of Cabin 5150 recording studios. This is a rare appearance in the UK from Joscho and his website lists this as his only UK date. John McCormick will feature on bass and Kristyna Myles will be the guest vocalist. Definitely one to include on your gig list.

Gig update

One regular event which we always try to mention here is the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain, which stands tall  amongst the regions musical events. Not many festivals could justify such an imposing title, but this one can, due in no small part to the ceaseless efforts of Rob Smith, the long-term festival director of this excellent event.

Understandably it came as a surprise when we learnt that Rob has decided to call it a day. But nothing is forever and Rob has passed his duties over to a new director Kate Carpenter – who on the one hand has inherited something special, but on the other has a hard act to follow. Best wishes to Kate who has been involved with the festival for a good few years and will no doubt keep it in safe hands.

A number of musicians who have supported Beaufort Jazz are appearing at the festival.

Gary Potter – 7.30pm Sunday 6th November – Birkenhead Priory

Modjango  – 11.30am Sunday 13th November – Woodside Terminal

Esmond Selwyn – 12.30pm Sunday 13th November – Floral Pavilion Plaza

Adam Palma – 12.30 and 6.30pm 26th November – Floral Pavilion Plaza

Another popular venue for us here in the North West is Parr Street in Liverpool where excellent jazz music is to be found every Tuesday night. Petrus will be appearing on Tuesday 15th November at 8pm and we would expect a number of Beaufort regulars to be attending.

Finally a classic gig is in prospect at the Lantern Theatre in Liverpool when John Wheatcroft and Daniel John Martin team up for An evening of Gypsy Jazz on Friday December 2nd.

Many will remember when we celebrated our 100th Beaufort Jazz evening in February earlier this year and welcomed Daniel John Martin as our featured artist for the evening. More recently John Wheatcroft performed the featured spot and it has to be said that both evenings were outstanding.

The Lantern is a relatively new venue and its website can be found by clicking the link here. It is positively minute compared to most theatres as it probably holds less than a hundred people. That’s less than the Ellerbrook Suite at the Briars Hall so this could well be a full house.

Gig update – Introducing Steele and friends

Its worth noting that Dobbies Garden world in Southport will be holding more of their Jazz in the afternoon gigs with Beaufort regulars once again scheduled to play. Tom Sykes will be appearing on the 29th September at 5.30 in the afternoon  as part of a trio playing jazz standards. Tom will be on piano with Phil Shotton on sax and John Watkinson on bass guitar completing the line up.

The venue is the garden centre restaurant and the gig is wrapped around a high tea. A previous visit to the venue to catch the Nicola Farnham gig at the Southport Jazz Festival proved to be very enjoyable. The restaurant is surprisingly comfortable and the acoustics much better than anticipated. Worth a trip.

The next Beaufort Jazz night will be on Monday 5th September when the featured band will be the Jazz Trio – Steele and Friends. If you hadn’t have guessed, the Steele in question is of course the veteran singer Doris Steele –  with Brian Cuddy on keyboards and Beaufort regular Pete Shannon on upright bass. More information to follow nearer the event.

As usual the featured performance will be followed by the  jam sessions. If you have just found us on the web and live in the North West – why not join us? We always make new musicians and members of the audience welcome – so just turn up and say hello.

Bickerstock starts Saturday 6th August!

BickerstockA very short post to announce that the annual Bickerstock free music festival starts on Saturday the 6th August at 12pm. This is the 9th year this small friendly festival has been running and it is hoped that this year will even more successful.

There are some changes this year, the most notable being that the camping will be on a separate field from the festival with a minibus service available from the campsite to the festival field.

The line up is to be announced shortly, and we would expect that as in previous years it will feature many Beaufort regulars. For more information please check the Bickerstock website. There is also a contact number 01695 727722 for enquiries.

Southport Jazz Festival – events announced

Southport Jazz festival logoThe line up for the Southport International Jazz Festival has just been announced with the event programme now available online. Please feel free to click on the blue text which will allow you to view and download the programme. For the first time the Festival will take place over 5 days from May 25th to the 29th with a gig on the Wednesday night at The Shrimper on Fylde Road. As usual there are a number of very familiar faces appearing at the Festival who have played at Beaufort Jazz evenings over the years…..

Funkus Monkus Noon Town Hall Gardens – Thursday 26th May

Twin Frets Noon Town Hall Gardens – Friday 27th May

Petrus 2.30pm Town Hall Gardens – Friday 27th May

Sunday Brunch with Vernon Fuller 11am Lords Café Bar – Sunday 29th May

Modjango 2.30pm The Inn Beer Shop – Sunday 29th May

Swingology 5pm Town Hall Gardens – Sunday 29th May

All gigs are taken from the event programme but you would be wise to double-check before travelling. In bad weather last year some of the outdoor events in the Town Hall Gardens were moved indoors to the Prince of Wales Hotel – but this wasn’t very well publicised with just a small insignificant notice on the railings to entrance on Lord Street. So if you are in Southport and it is raining it’s worth checking to see if the event is happening indoors somewhere.

Gig update – Petrus, John Wheatcroft and introducing the Swan “Live Lounge”

A brief post to keep you updated with gigs where Beaufort Jazz regulars are playing.

Paul Draper is organising the new Live  Lounge at the The Swan Inn in Aughton on the last Friday of every month. It is a new evening, part organised – part open mic to showcase local musicians. Last week was only the second evening and featured Trez Fez with Tom Sykes guesting on violin. It’s a very pleasant location in the lounge adjacent to the main restaurant, with what has to be said are surprisingly good acoustics. Staring at 8pm it’s definitely one to put into your diary.

Tom Sykes will also be appearing with Les Bolger and Danny Mannix at Dobbies Garden World at 5pm on Thursday 28th April. There is a small entrance fee and high tea will be included. The same musicians will also be appearing with John McCormick as Petrus at the Southport Jazz Festival. They are scheduled to appear on Friday 27th May at 2.30 pm in the Town Hall Gardens. This is always a very popular location and Petrus played here last year for same festival.

Finally we also hear that John Wheatcroft is performing at Parr Street on the 12th of April with the band Metamorphic. Parr Street is one of the iconic music clubs in the North West and John is one of the finest guitarists in the region – so it is likely to be a special occasion.

The next Beaufort Jazz night is on Monday 4th April and the featured musicians will be La Paire Llamedos. Unique is an overused word nowadays, however this group is just that and completely different from anything you will have heard. A full announcement will appear in the few days.

Parr Street Jazz – Clifton Harrydass with Trez Fez at Studio 2

A few months ago we got an email which suggested that Jazz enthusiasts should check out the Tuesday Jazz evenings at Studio 2 in Parr Street Liverpool. Apparently the venue was an unusual combination of Hotel, Bar and a recording studio which had welcomed some of the biggest names in music throughout the years.  After some time on the to-do list we finally managed to pay Studio 2 a visit.

The hotel can be found behind a slightly anonymous facade and once inside, Studio 2 can be found on the right at the back of the reception area. It s a small, intimate and quite friendly place with comfortable seating. The bar area is thoughtfully separated from the lounge area –  which makes for easy listening without the usual bar chatter and noise.

From conversation with regulars, it seems that the evening kicks off with the “house” band who are then joined by a guest artist. This evening the guest was the singer Doreen Edwards who has to be said is a splendid vocalist with an extensive repertoire.

The evening normally then concludes with a jam session where musicians have the opportunity to perform with the house band. Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to stay till the end as we had a train to catch.

If Beaufort regulars contemplated a night out in Liverpool they might want to consider tomorrow evening when Clifton Harrydass with Trez Fez will perform at Studio 2.  The evening will probably start at 8 to 8.30 pm  and should obviously be very enjoyable. Try to make the effort –  you wont be disappointed.

Beaufort musicians – gig update

Guitar Festival logoAs we enter November the days may shorter and the weather colder, but at least we can look forward to some high quality live music events – one of which is the annual International Guitar Festival of Great Britain. Now in its 22nd year. the Festival has played host to many Beaufort musicians over the years. This year is no exception with the following two gigs coming to our attention.

Modjango are set to appear  at the Floral Pavillion Winter Gardens on November 5th,  the opening date of the festival. They are appearing with the Djangonauts in an evening which is a tribute to Django Reinhardt. Details can be found here

Also Tom Sykes will be playing in the Les Bolger jazz guitar ensemble. They will be appearing at the Floral Pavillion Winter Gardens on November 7th. Details of their gig to be found at this link

If you enjoy Beaufort evenings you are likely to enjoy these gigs. It’s also worth checking out many of the other performances on the Festival website which can be found here

Beaufort musicians – gig update

A quick update with two events where Beaufort Jazz musicians will be playing in the near future.

Adam Palma will be playing at the Northern Guitar Show which will be held at the Aintree Racecourse Exhibition Centre on Sunday 28th November. The show will be open from 10am to 5pm. We hope to post a bit more about the show nearer the date.

Dobbies Garden World in Southport have started a monthly jazz evening.  Petrus (featuring Tom Sykes on violin) will be playing on Thursday 26th October between 5.30 and 6.30pm. Apparently this early evening event started in August with Vernon Fuller performing – unfortunately we didn’t learn about it in time to give Vernon a mention here.

Finally, don’t forget its our 8th anniversary tonight. Zazous Anglais will be our featured performance (see below), along with the many other fine musicians who will play. Hope you can join us.

Bickerstock starts on Saturday

Bickerstock 2009

If you havent heard of Bickerstock – it’s a  very popular local music festival held here  in rural West Lancashire.  It gets am honourable mention on this blog as Paul Draper (our resident Beaufort Jazz sound engineer) is the founder and principle organiser of Bickerstock.

Now in its seventh year, Bickerstock is what you would call a true community effort. Essentially a volunteer festival, generous people give their time unselfishly to provide live music and all the other support services needed to run the event. Last year a number of local charities benefited from Bickerstock – a point  which makes it even more worthy of your support.

It’s a true family event with food and refreshments and many different children’s activities on offer. So even if you only have a couple of hours to spare, its well worth the visit

Entry is free and car parking is available. To find out more, please check out the Bickerstock Website
